Many of the people there were encouraged by the government to migrate to the area known as South Tyrol. The inducement was small parcels of land to be given free to each family. The area in which they settled was very mountainous. The mountain slopes were not suitable for raising agricultural crops, and the land was not very productive. The men, who were skilled tradesmen, especially in the building trades, had to find employment in order to be able to provide some of the necessities of life for their families.
Many jobs were available for skilled workmen in northern Italy. The skilled Austrian workers were welcomed with open arms and work of all types was made available to them. As time went on, the Austrians became a problem for the Italians, because they spoke a German dialect. Also, their names were very difficult for the Italians to pronounce. Finally, the Italian government came up with a solution to this problem .... all the workers from South Tyrol had to learn to speak Italian and had to change their names!
Fury Dalla's ancestral name was Streichholz (match stick). The male members of the family were excellent carpenters, and to make extra money, they made match sticks. The Italians did not like those names because, for them, they were still most difficult to pronounce; they referred to those individuals as "the people from the valley" (Dallavalle). When John Dalla, Fury's father, became a naturalized American citizen, the judge recommended that he drop the last part of his name and use only "Dalla" as a surname.
The Todeschi family name was originally Steinmauer (stone mason); being of German stock, the Italians referred to them as "The Germans", and in Italian that was "Todeschi". As a result, Todeschi was adopted as a surname. Many of the workers from South Tyrol adopted new names which were descriptive of their skilled trade or place of residence.
Fury Dalla, who furnished this comprehensive information and in other ways gave encouragement for the original completion of this work, was born in Silverton July 21, 1905, the son of John and Domenica Todeschi Dalla. He graduated from Silverton High School in 1924, and most of his working life was as a teacher in California. After his retirement, he and his wife, the former Alvene Eppich of Mancos, Colorado, also a teacher, returned to Durango. Fury died there July 9, 1988, and was buried at Mancos, where his brother, John, was also buried.
