“Across the Great Divide” was planned in 1976 by Irene Epp, then Director of the Silverton Public Library, The San Juan County Commissioners, the San Juan County Historical Society, and San Juan Regional Planning Commission.

The series of nine weekly programs was designed to promote discussion regarding the planning of future development in San Juan County.  The first four meeting were concerned with history of the county during its first century.  Sessions five thru eight focused on current issues.  The final session was a summing up of the issues addressed throughout the county.  Each program involved local residents, humanities scholars and technical experts.
