Freda Peterson’s new book looks at those dead and gone
Decades of research by Freda Peterson into who exactly is buried in Silverton’s Hillside Cemetery culminated in her epic two-volume “The Story of Hillside Cemetery” in the 1980s … Peterson has now published “Died Here – Buried There,” a companion volume to “The Story of Hillside Cemetery” that chronicles those who died in San Juan County and Silverton but were subsequently buried elsewhere …
The compilation in “Died Here – Buried There,” is listed alphabetically, starting with the unfortunate William Accord, who died March 12, 1907 at age 42 …The book … includes information on hundreds of others who died in Silverton – from its founding days until the present – but who were buried elsewhere.
“When I did the Hillside Cemetery books I read all the microfilmed newspapers since 1879,” Peterson said. From that she was able to list hundreds who died here but for various reasons were not buried in the local cemetery …Peterson has also authored books on those who died in snowslides and in the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918.
“… it means a lot to somebody to be able to find family members in ... my books. It makes it all worthwhile.” |
